Subscription products

Products customers pay for every month or year — and the several ways they behave differently.

Esta página aún no está traducida. Se muestra en inglés; todo lo que describe funciona igual en tu idioma.

A subscription product is billed on a recurring interval instead of once. Most of the rules below follow from that single difference.

They are never put in the cart

A cart line is charged once; a subscription recurs. So:

  • their cards in product grid and list blocks show no cart button
  • a subscription sitting on a wishlist has no "move to cart"
  • they are signed up for on their own product page

They need a customer account

A guest who clicks Subscribe is taken to your shop's sign-up, with a link to sign in instead. As soon as the account exists — by email or via Google — they go straight on to Stripe's payment page without having to press the button again.

After paying, the customer lands on the Subscriptions tab of their account with the new subscription and a success message. Backing out of Stripe's page returns them to the product page.

A signed-in customer goes to Stripe directly.

They are always paid through Stripe

Invoice and cash never apply to subscriptions. In a shop whose products are all subscriptions, both offline methods are automatically switched off and their toggles locked in the payment settings — the card says why. They unlock again as soon as a non-subscription product exists.

The Stripe methods a subscription's payment page offers are the ones switched on under Payment Methods — a method switched off there is off for subscriptions too.

TWINT is a special case: subscriptions are paid on Stripe's own checkout page, which only offers what your Stripe account can actually charge. Until TWINT is switched on in your own Stripe account, subscriptions offer no TWINT at all.

The buy row has no quantity stepper

Like a one-of-a-kind piece, a subscription's product page shows no −/+ stepper — the buy row is just the button, and the cart button takes the whole row.

They are left out of the product feeds

Subscription products are excluded from both the Google Shopping feed and the Meta catalogue.

No shipping needed

A shop selling only subscriptions needs no shipping countries at all. Its footer shows no shipping link, and the Shipping settings section carries no "still to do" dot.

Managing them afterwards

Everything after the first payment — the payment history, invoices, credit notes, cancelling — is under Subscriptions in the sidebar. See Managing subscriptions.
